Elseworld's Finest :: Batgirl

In 1998 DC Comics published "Elseworld's Finest: Supergirl & Batgirl" written by Barbara Kesel and drawn by Matt Haley. In the universe of Elseworld's Finest Barbara Gordon is secretly Batgirl, a very Dark, mysterious, and fearful warrior who defends Gotham City from evil; she is its only defender. On occasion Batgirl collaborates with the heroes of the Justice Society, led by Wonder Woman, but this is a loose association, since Batgirl does not trust super heroes.

When Barbara Gordon and Bruce Wayne were just a couple of kids, Lex Luthor hired Joe Chill, an assassin, to murder Thomas and Martha Wayne. When Chill was about to pull the trigger, Jim Gordon and his wife, who were coming out of a theater with their daughter Barbara intervened, and were murdered instead ... sounds familiar? Well, here is where things take an interesting twist, because little Barbara took her father's gun and pointed it at Chill.

Barbara was later taken by the Wayne family, and encouraged by Bruce, she trained herself to reach physical and mental perfection, until Batgirl was born. She has dedicated herself to fight evil, and find the way to punish the man responsible for her parents' death: Luthor!

Batgirl develops a friendship with Supergirl, an alien from the planet Krypton who was raised and trained by Wonder Woman and the Justice Society, and she also has a bone to pick with Mister Luthor. Eventually both super heroines are able to capture Luthor and make him pay for his crimes.

For all those who keep saying that Barbara Gordon should not become Batgirl again, this is a perfect example of how wonderfully the character would work; hopefully the nightmare of Oracle will soon be over, and the real Batgirl will rise again!
