Batgirl 6 :: A House Made of Spun Glass

Lots of stuff happen in this issue. Batgirl fights a brainwashed Bruce Wayne, and along the way, we learn more of her past and current relationship with him and with Batman. There were a couple of nice, touching moments that clearly establish the solid dynamics between them going forward. Following the line of character development, there is more of Barbara's mom, who is looking very creepy right now, and Batgirl's ongoing conflict with Det. McKenna. Then there's Gretel. While Mirror brought forth Batgirl's survivor guilt, Gretel was the device used to show the two paths offered to one who has been victimized, and once again Barbara sees a piece of herself in her enemy. The art team does a great job fitting the equivalent of two (modern day) issues of story in 20 pages without making it look crowded or eye-straining. Kudos to Gail Simone for breaking away from the multi-issue arc with this tale; two parts is a good number.

Batwoman 6 :: To Drown The World I

It was one of the most anticipated arrivals in comics' recent history, but she is finally here; Amy Reeder joins the creative team as Batwoman's enemies threaten "To Drown The World." With a style all her own, Reeder brings tons of energy and vigor to the art department, while keeping true to the fluid and versatile layouts that are so distinctive in this title. The art transition between Williams III and Reeder is indeed seamless despite their talents being so different. The writing is fantastic as well; telling the story from six points of view at different points in time, Williams III and Blackman create a strong sense of inevitability; as if the characters are spiraling down towards an unavoidable fate where they are bound to collide with each other. And this is only the first part of the arc! The Weeping Woman was just the tip of an amazingly well written and illustrated iceberg.

Birds of Prey 5 :: Chokepoint

If the purpose of the Birds' enemy is to confuse them, then he certainly achieved his goal, and in the process is dragging us along. "Chokepoint" by Duane Swierczynski turns everything upside down for readers and characters, throwing us all into new situations that seriously disrupt the flow of the story. I am sure there is a bigger picture to this, but the plot felt like a do-over of issue #4. An interesting moment between Canary and Katana makes Tatsu look a lot less creepy, and Poison Ivy seems to have never really left her villanous roots -pun intended.

The art by Saiz, Pina, and Chung is more refined and not as rough as in previous issues; their Batgirl, particularly is very well done. Speaking of Batgirl, the circumstances of her joining the team are still unclear, and there is a back-and-forth between her willing and not willing to be a part of it. This issue might look better as part of a whole, but it is hard to judge it as a single book; only when the arc is finished we'll know whether it was truly worth the reading or not.

So now that Hostess has filed for Chapter 11 protection just two years after emerging from bankruptcy, it seems a good time to feature the final Hostess ad featuring Mera. In previous ads for Fruit Pies, Twinkies, and Cup Cakes she had played some minor roles, but this time, the entire ad is dedicated to Mera and Aqualad.

"A Candy Full of Spiders" jumps right into the action with Batgirl trying to stop some bad guys from her old days, and introducing a new menace named Gretel. As she has done in all other issues so far, Gail Simone gives us one little piece of information about Barbara's early career and also about her recovery; just enough to keep us satisfied and asking for more; much better than throwing it all in a "flashback" issue. I have grown fond of the inner monologue in this series; this style is enjoyable because it provides two perspectives on the events being told, and what human being does not maintain a never-ending conversation with one self? The middle of the issue also is strong in character development, drama, and conflict; and to leave us hanging, the story closes with Gretel about to beat Batgirl in the most ironic possible way. A must read!

One could write an entire dissertation on the cover of this issue alone; what a beautiful piece of art, worthy of getting hung on a museum wall. Readers will also be glad to have judged the book just by the cover, as its content is just as great. The final chapter of "Hydrology" marks the defining face-to-face between Batwoman and La Llorona. What a nice way for Kate to finally be at peace with herself for what happened to her sister; this epiphany makes the character move forward and grow, not only as a person, but as a hero a well. This issue also opened the gates for the title to expand its horizons in multiple directions, as Batwoman is forced to make a hard choice in order to continue her mission, and a warning from a guest star in the final pages, creates a sense of inevitability for what's to come. That last line of this issue, that promise, was the best part of the whole thing. Excellent arc! Next: "To Drown the World" and Amy Reeder joins the series.

Aquaman 4 :: The Trench IV

Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis present the final chapter of "The Trench" as Aquaman and Mera immerse themselves in the depths of the mid-Atlantic ridge. This is a complete change of scenery, and the challenge and complexity of drawing, inking, and coloring an obscure environment such as the bottom of the ocean, have just earned the artistic team a standing ovation; what a great job. The resolution to the story makes you empathize with the trench critters despite their "Aliens" quality; on the other hand, that same resolution forces the question: did this story really need four issues to be told? The end of the arc brings readers full circle regarding the jokes and the awkward reactions from the public in the initial chapters; now that everyone can see how totally awesome Aquaman is, let's hope that's the end of that. Mera didn't get to do much in this issue other than saying "Arthur?" a lot of times, but there was also some display of power underwater. Next stop in this thrilling ride: Who sunk Atlantis? and just two months away from the spotlight on Mera.

Birds of Prey :: Absolutely Mental

The Birds of Prey welcome a new member in "Absolutely Mental" by Duane Swierczynski and Jesus Saiz. Whereas Batgirl's guest role in Nightwing #4 was carefully crafted and in synch with previous events, her joining the female super hero squad was disjointed and made little sense. Don't get me wrong, I was thrilled to know Batgirl was going to appear in this title, and later on when it was announced she would actually join, I was ecstatic; however, even though it's been months since the initial announcement, her sudden presence felt improvised and last-minute; like the story was supposed to go a different way, and then five minutes ago somene said "hey! throw Batgirl in there, draw her in the pages you haven't done yet and let's see where that goes". There is no explanation, no actual reason, and worst of all, in complete contradiction to Dinah and Barbara's talk in issue #1. Perhaps issue #5 will take care of these concerns and smooth Batgirl's induction to the team.

Nonetheless, December 2011 was a great month for the Dominoed Daredoll with apperances in three different titles. I knew it would eventually happen, just didn't think her success would be so big so soon.

Nightwing 4 :: South Beach Connection

Kyle Higgins brings Nightwing and Batgirl together in "South Beach Connection". It is so pleasant to see when creators communicate and are in synch with each other; this issue not only is a nice stand-alone story for Nightwing, but also a nice follow-up of sorts to Gail Simone's Batgirl #3. This team-up serves not just to go after some bad guy, but also to patch things up between Dick and Barbara; the combination of action and character development was just right. By the end of the issue, we have a better sense of closure between the two of them, and also kind of a new rogue for Batgirl named Spinebender (which for some strange reason I keep reading as Spellbinder). While I missed Eddy Barrows' pencils, Trevor McCarthy did a great job with his movie-like action sequences, and continuing with the theme of after-images when illustrating acrobatics. Overall, this was a fun and enjoyable issue that no fan of Nightwing or Batgirl can miss.

Batgirl 4 :: An End to Dreams

"An End to Dreams" is the final confrontation between Batgirl and Mirror, presented by Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf. The final chapter of this first arc takes us inside the minds of both characters, and while Mirror believes no one deserves to have a second chance, Batgirl feels she is undeserving of the one given to her; they are indeed twisted reflections of each other. Their conflict is resolved, not in a predictable manner, but in the only one that made sense, bringing to a close the first adventure for the dominoed daredoll in her new beginning. Ardian Syaf was absolutely fantastic in this issue; each one of Batgirl's expressions, her movements, the dynamics, and the flow of the panels, was exceptional; while Vicente Cifuentes and Ulises Arreola did an amazing job with the shadow and light contrast. The end of the story introduces a drama element that as far as I recall has never been addressed before, so hold on to your chairs because the ride just gets crazier from here!

Batwoman 4 :: Estuary

An issue not for the faint of heart, "Estuary" picks up right after the end of last month's chapter and introduces in a gruesome way a new menace to Batwoman's world. The intensity of the opening pages is something I had never seen in a "conventional" comic book, and while it might provoke an uproar among the non-readers, it was tastefully done. If anyone was on the fence regarding Cameron Chase, you will make up your mind here, and if you like Flamebird, there are huge developments for her. With the exception of the first and last pages, the story is told in its entirety in double spreads, without sacrificing content. Williams III and Haden Blackman are building a masterpiece that will for sure reverberate beyond the world of comics for many years to come; the storytelling, the art, and the characterization make of this book an absolute winner.

So the corrected version for the cover of Batwing #7 has been posted, and it is indeed Barbara Gordon who is featured along with Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Batwing. Why does hell have to raise for these things to get noticed? It was never about a colorist making a mistake; it was about the dozens of hands this image was put on before getting posted on the internet, and no one noticing the error. Knowing corporate America the way I do, probably some intern got yelled at over this while the actual editors who were in charge of doing quality control still have no idea of what happened.

One tries to be supportive of DC and then they go and pull stuff like this. What you see below is an early preview of Batwing #7 which features the character's first visit to Gotham. Batman and his closest associates share the cover with the titular; but as you may clearly notice, Barbara is shown with blond hair and purple accents in her armor to make her look like Stephanie Brown. I am not an avid fan of Steph's or anyting like that, but I completely understand why her followers would be p****d off to see how their feelings for the character are being played with in such a cheap way.

Saying it was a coloring error won't do it, as DC pays people called "editors" who are supposed to notice and correct this kind of things. What is the purpose of this, I wonder? Creating buzz and controversy? Test the waters for a possible second Batgirl in current continuity? Was it really an error, an oversight by potentially dozens of people? I just don't see a reasonable excuse for such a move. Now fans of Steph have to add this insult to their injury; so as a Babs fan I apologize to you and ask you don't hate on Barbara because of things like this; it's not worth it.

Ever since her debut in the pages of "Brightest Day", Siren, Mera's sister has also been referred to as Hila; so just to set the record straight, know this: Siren and Hila are not the same character. Geoff Johns has stated (NYCC 2010) that he was being very careful in ensuring that the distinction was made. Hila was Mera's twin (identical) sister, while Siren is her younger (non-identical) sister. Whether this is a moot point with the new continuity or not, that remains to be seen. Thing is that if the new Aqualad, Jackson Hyde still exists in the DCnU, we still don't know who his birth mother is. See where I'm going?

IGN spoke earlier this week to Geoff John about the Aquaman series, and naturally, Mera was a part of the topics discussed. Here is a snippet of the interview:

Speaking of Mera, a lot of fans are really pumped for issue #6, which is her spotlight issue. Can you tell us about what we'll be seeing in that solo issue?

"Yeah, you'll learn more about her. You'll see a different side to her. In that issue, she tries to assimilate a little bit to our world. She wants to learn more about it and it's not quite as easy as she thought it would be. She gets involved with something that reveals a pretty dark part of her."

You've talked in the past about your love for that character, even saying that you'd like to write a Mera book. What is it about the character that intrigues you so much?

"I think it's her intensity; her powers too I think are unique, especially the way that Ivan and Joe draw them, it's beautiful. But there's something about her – her strength and conviction and her troubled past – all of that combined just makes her a really compelling character. A lot of the characters from the 60s and the Silver Age at DC have some squeaky clean origins, but hers never was."

Aquaman #3 :: The Trench III

Aquaman and Mera's first round against the creatures from the trench continues in a story written by Geoff Johns. Worthy of mention is how shamelessly powerful Mera is portrayed; you go girl! This issue also lays the foundation for an updated origin for Aquaman, and although we only get some bits and pieces, it already looks interesting. It is good to know he had a normal and happy childhood; so thank you Geoff for doing away with the campy "raised by dolphins" thing. We also get hints of a potential big baddie looming in the horizon and maybe even a link to another Justice League member. The Reis/Prado/Reis trifecta continues delivering A-grade art with detailed work and vivid colors. My one question by the end of this issue as Aquaman and Mera dive to the trench looking for round two is: Can they fly or just jump really high? Now that is a mystery!

Batwoman 3 :: Gaining Stream

Things start to spin out of control for Batwoman in the third chapter of "Hydrology" thanks to J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman. You would think that a horrific encounter with the Weeping Woman is enough to ruin one's night, but for Batwoman this was just the tip of the iceberg. A violent run-in with Cameron Chase, a nasty argument with cousin Bette, and relationship drama with Maggie Sawyer filled this beautifully pencilled issue. Dave Stewart's colors continue to get better and better, and we even get to enjoy two extra pages of story. "Red Knight" was an elegant addition to Batwoman's world. Kate Kane, just like Batman, chooses the worst possible way to protect those dear to her, and although her intentions are the best, she goes the wrong way about it, making her look like a big beyotch. I loved that. Next: Flamebird! And I am worried!

Batgirl 3 :: A Breath of Broken Glass

Wow, what an issue! "A breath of broken glass" jumps right into the heart of the action with Batgirl trying to defuse a very explosive situation, but Mirror -like several of the other New 52 villains- means business and proves to be quite violent and lethal. The theme on the first act of this issue makes me pretty confident that by the end of the arc we will know what happened to Barbara's paralysis. The interlude was charged with character developement, and was perfectly handled by Gail Simone. The third act brings Nightwing into the story, which serves many purposes: Separating Batgirl from the rest of the Bat-verse, informing us about Babs and Dick's relationship in the DCnU, giving us some backhistory in the context of the new continuity, and entertaining us with a pretty cool fight sequence. Ardian Syaf, Vicente Cifuentes, and Ulises Arreola were nothing but amazing in this issue, and are giving the title a unique identity. This book was excellent!

The partial numbers, at least. Diamond Comics released its initial report of comic book sales for October 2011. Keep in mind that these numbers are orders placed by comic book shops, and not necessarily final-final sales to consumers. Nonetheless, our bat-redheads had a great performance during the month that just ended.

Batgirl #2 ended up at position #14 in the quantity rank and at #13 in the dollar rank; not too shabby! Batwoman #2 ended at #14 in the quantity rank and at #45 in the dollar rank -I think this was due to the book being available at a non-refundable, lower price for retailers.

Aquaman #2 (co-starring Mera) occupied position #18 in quantity and #16 in dollar. Other favorites of mine who ended up well positioned were New Guardians (17/50), and Red Lanterns (20/20). This ranking is not including Batgirl #1 third print or Batwoman #1 second print; those might come up later when the top 300 are published. Aquaman #1 second print, though, ended up at positions #88/91 which are excellent considering it is a second run.

Aquaman #2 :: The Trench II

As promised by Geoff Johns, Aquaman #2 served to formally introduce Mera as a superhero in the DCnU, and what an introduction that was! I don't get tired of looking at that amazing scene where Mera creates a water mermaid; this is my favorite panel so far, and it shows new readers how cool her power is.

Ivan and Rod Reis also added this new effect whenever Mera uses her powers, her eyes start glowing as if she is in a trance. We had seen it before during Brightest Day to imply the superhuman effort she was making to manipulate the ocean, but I like that it is now being used whenever she turns the power button on.

This issue shows how powerful Mera is, and the possibilities of what she can do with her abilities are endless. It seems she can create constructs out of the moisture in the air, so no need to be near a body of water all the time. Does this mean she can manipulate the water molecules in a living being? What about snow, ice, or water vapor?

Here is Mera kicking some Trench butt, not only with hard water, but also with old-fashioned fists, and what a punch she packs! Certainly that capability to survive under enormous ocean pressures has exercised her muscles! This issue was fantastic, and I am thrilled for what is coming next, I can't wait!

As if having Batgirl pop-up in the Pages of Dark Knight #2 wasn't cool enough, guess who else made a cameo appearance in the issue? You got that right! Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman also showed up among the group of Batman's associates who were fighting his enemies. Batwoman's small sequence takes place in Devil's Square as she confronts a transformed Cavalier. Her one-liner was kind of weird, though; "What the hell is happening to this planet?", wouldn't it have been enough with "this city?". Alex Ross and comic book author Paul Dini initially planned to revive Batgirl Barbara Gordon using an updated version of the character's original costume, with red accents in place of the traditional yellow. This proposal would restore Barbara's ability to walk, but would leave her a darker heroine. DC's editorial staff decided that Oracle should remain as their token chairbound heroine, and the idea was discarded.

Seven years later, after the end of "Infinite Crisis", DC editors called for a redesign of Batwoman. Alex Ross drew inspiration from the modified Batgirl costume he had designed for Barbara Gordon years prior to revitalize Batwoman, and so Kate Kane was born.
